Unique-looking buttons for dresses can be made by covering them with beads. Buttons can be either be round, triangular, oval or square ranging in size from 0.5 to 1.5 inches. However, patterns and charted images are most appropriate for a larger button.

A unique decorative pattern for a dress can be constructed by using bobbin stitches, filling the bobbin with silk ribbon and stitching the design on the other side. This can be used to decorate small areas of a garment such as the collar and cuffs.
