A dispersive morph in the naked mole-rat
Article Abstract:
Individuals of a unique dispersive phenotype present in naked mole-rat colonies have a tendency to disperse from the colony and mate with non-colony rats. The dispersers are similar to the reproductive colony founders of termites and ants. They have a high level of fat and luteinizing hormone. The high fat content is probably a protection from starvation during dispersion. The morphology, physiology, and behavior of the dispersers are different from that of other rats.
