Asia Pacific is the world's fastest growing dairy market, with a value of $43 billion and volume growing by 5.7% per year, according to a new report by Datamonitor. The survey shows that Japan and South Korea are world-leading developers of functional milks. The region's largest market for dairy products is China, with a volume of 7.7 million t in 1997, followed by Japan, with a market valued at $9.9 billion. The largest milk producer in the world is India, with production of 78 million t.

German butter and margarine consumption trend reversing

The German dairy market is experiencing growing demand from consumers, especially the butter sector, where market share has risen 3% since 1992. The 1994 butter market totalled 397,000 t, valued at 3.2 billion German marks. In the milk sector, long life milk has a 55% share of the total market, up 2% since 1992, while yoghurt sales have risen by 4% in volume. Per capita consumption of margarine has dropped slightly since 1990.
