Auction index drops 16 percent in second quarter

Article Abstract:

The Wine Spectator Auction Index tracks quarterly wine auction results. The second quarter results were 16% lower than the first quarter of 1999, but that does not mean that fine wine sales were stagnant. There is a wide variety in high and low bids, with 40% of the low bids recorded in London where commissions are lower. There has been a trend of volatility in the market, but it is still a seller's market.

Article Abstract:

Early spring and late winter auctions demonstrated the increasing gap between the uncommon and the ordinary wines. Rare wines continue to outdistance everyday bottlings as the average wine lover can revel in the fact that prices for regular bottlings remain comparatively stable.
