Falling domestic consumption pushes Italian food trade balance into the red
Article Abstract:
A study by the National Institute of Statistics is likely to show a deficit in the Italian food industry trade figures for 1996. Food sales are down by 0.2% and production by 1.3% from 1995. All sectors of the food industry are affected, with small and medium sized companies being hit hardest. Beer and wine production are down by 9.4% and the sugar industry by 20.4%. However, pasta and frozen fish sales have increased by 6.4% and 2.7%, respectively, and Italy's stable inflation rate of less than 3% in 1996 may help improve the trade balance.

More people alert to dangers of food poisoning
Article Abstract:
A report by the UK Food and Drink Federation (FDF) shows that more people are aware of the threat of food poisoning, although awareness about food safety in the home needs to be raised. The FDF is offering guidelines about storing perishable food, how soon food should be eaten after cooking, storing raw meats and cooked food and personal hygiene in the kitchen.
