Few Merlots age well

Article Abstract:

Current Merlots are light, fruity wines that need, with few exceptions, to be enjoyed young. Cellaring a Merlot is seldom a good idea. California wineries Matanzas Creek and Duckhorn have been making Merlot for several years, and their vintners discuss the wine.

Outlook great for 1995 Cabernet; California barrel samples show well in a blind tasting, but offerings of futures have fizzled

The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon vintage is expected to be outstanding, but wineries are not selling futures because the wines are selling so briskly. Vintages from 1978 to 1995 are rated, and the best 1995 California Cabernets are listed.

No longer simply Cabernet's little brother

California has been producing some excellent Merlots in the last several years. Lighter than Cabernet, these fruity wines vary in intensity and quality. Many wines are rated on a scale of one to 100, with tasting notes provided.
