Germans work less for food
Article Abstract:
Food prices in Germany have tripled since 1960, and average hourly wages have increased eightfold, according to comparisons made by DBV, the Germany Farmers' Union, based on a department of trade and industry report. Animal produce has become cheaper, although prices for bread, potato and fish have increased faster than the cost of living. Farmers have raised efficiency standards and made technological advances, helping food prices reach the current relatively low levels.

Food prices fall in new EU Member States, but not as sharply as expected
Article Abstract:
Food prices in Sweden rose 2.4%, and fell by 2.4% in Austria and 4.5% in Finland since the countries became Member States on January 01. Swedish food imports became more expensive because of the devaluation of the krona, and Finnish prices fell becasue of the reduction in food VAT. Austrian consumers have been disappointed that prices have not fallen more, and in Sweden, where lower prices occur, they have not been passed on to the consumer.
