Wine producers in Europe and across North America report on the quality of their 1997 harvests. German vintners believe their harvest for riesling will be the finest in 25 years, and Bordeaux and Burgundy, in France, also report prime conditions. California vintners struggled through a difficult harvest.

Wine Spectator magazine conducted a taste test of various newly released white Bordeaux wines. Several were found to merit good or outstanding ratings, particularly those from the French vineyards of Pessac-Leognan and Graves.
