Tony and Jo Ann Truchard acquired a 20-acre prune orchard in Carneros in 1973 and replanted grapes on the property. They now have about 175 acres and make first rate Cabernet, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir and other wines. Their Syrah is unusually exquisite.

Clarke produces a new wine called Alexis, a blend of Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot, a wine that merited him a 91 rating on Wine Spectator's scale of one to 100. The 59-year-old vintner's winemaker, Andre Tchelistcheff, spent 40 years at Beaulieu making Cabernet.

Ted Lemon studied winemaking in France and went to work in 1986 as winemaker for Chateau Woltner in Napa Valley. He and his wife Heidi made their first vintages of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Sonoma and Mendocino. They call their wine Littorai.
