JAPAN: LABELLING LAWS AND DIET FOODS
Article Abstract:
A survey of diet foods sold in the Tokyo area, carried out by the Tokyo Metropolitan Authority recently found that 80% of the 102 samples infringed advertising and/or labelling regulations. The infringements included claims that the products prevent fat synthesis, improve the body's metabolic rate, or that they relieve constipation. Only food for specialised health use is allowed to make such claims.

JAPAN: RESEARCH ON GREEN TEA AND DIOXIN
Article Abstract:
Research carried out jointly by Kobe University and Ito En, a leading green tea company, showed that catechins present in green tea effectively combat dioxin, and that dioxin poisoning may be prevented by green tea drinks. Since incineration is Japan's main waste disposal method, environmental pollution by dioxin is a concern at present.
