Tesco buys Lotus and moves into Thailand
Article Abstract:
CP Group has sold a 75% stake in Lotus, which operates a chain of 13 hypermarkets in Thailand, to leading UK food retailer Tesco for 111 million pounds sterling. Tesco anticipates that the hypermarkets will achieve sales of around 260 million pounds sterling in 1998, and feels that there is potential to open 12 further outlets in the period to 2002. It has been considering expansion into Asia as part of its policy of operating large outlets in emerging markets.

European retail - a new leader emerges

An article about the merger of two of France's largest hypermarkets, Carrefour and Promodes, is presented. The combined retail company will be the largest retailer in Europe and the second largest retailer in the world after Wal-Mart.
