A new year's resolution worth keeping is one to start a wine cellar. Contrary to popular belief, it is not just prohibitively expensive wines that are worthy of cellaring. In fact it is more fun to find wines that are good values for lower prices. Several are suggested.

Wines fail from the center out so that bad wine is noticeable in its middle taste and texture. Bad cellaring will ruin a wine, but poor winemaking can also produce less than excellent wines. Old vines with low yields and careful winemaking produce the best wine.

French wines dominated the 1997 Grand Europeenne, at which 70% of the Chardonnays being judged were from Burgundy. The results demonstrate the fact that style is more important than character in blind tastings.
