Ben Papapietro and Bruce Perry started experimenting with winemaking in the former's home garage and soon created a ripe, rich Pinot Noir style that evolved into their first commercial release in 1998. The duo made seven different Pinot Noir bottlings in 2004, all from purchased grapes, sticking with tried-and-trusted methods, including labor-intensive, gentle handling.

Schrader: Success strikes twice for this Napa vintner

Napa vintner Fred Schrader, the owner of Schrader Cellars, has been twice successful in producing critically acclaimed Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Following the success of Colgin-Schrader wines in the 1990s, he has established his second impressive label with grapes from the To-Kalon vineyard to produce lush, fruit-forward, evenly balanced wines.

The Bonaccorsi Wine Co. in Santa Maria, Santa Barbara County, was formed by Michael and Jenne Lee Bonaccorsi to make wines devoted to Burgundian and Rhone varietals. They recognized the potential of Pinot Noir from Santa Rita Hills early on and tapped some of the best vineyard sources in the area.
