The road ahead

Article Abstract:

Grocery wholesale companies and independent retailers must develop new strategies to meet the trends of consolidations in the industry, tighter consumer demands and increasing information technology in order to survive the rapidly changing industry, according to President John R. Block of the Food Distributors International (FDI). Block addressed the participants of FDI's Midyear Executive Conference in Colorado Springs, CO, which had the theme "Strategies 2005: A Vision for the Wholesale-Supplied System." An FDI study reported that the wholesale-supplied system represents a 37% share of the total retail grocery industry sales, compared to 35% of the self-distributing chains and 28% for direct store delivery.

Perfecting plastic

Article Abstract:

Eastman Chemical Co. of Kingsport, TN, has developed the Spectar copolymer, which is likely to boost the aesthetics of point-of-purchase (POP) displays found in supermarkets. Although Spectar copolymer was launched in 1994, it is only now that the plastic resin is being suited to the needs of supermarket industry. Spectar copolymer is susceptible to fabrication applications, which include hot-stamping and die-cutting. Spectar copolymer is touted to be 15 to 20 times tougher than acrylic, an at the same time, it can easily be molded into various forms that are impossible with glass or acrylic.
