Washington state is producing very impressive wines by making them in small volumes, though they can be expensive. Oregon has been very adept at producing very good pinot noirs. The editor's choice is the 1992 Kiona Columbia Valley merlot, which sells for a mere $12.

Washington state vintners are producing many delicious, reasonably priced wines. A 1992 Quilceda Creek Washington Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve at $49 is rated 95 on a scale of one to 100. A selection of best values is also provided, along with an alphabetical listing.

Pomerols stand tall, as '47 falls short

A recent tasting of 1947 wines from France, Italy and Portugal was a disappointment, as only twelve of the 66 wines tasted could be ranked outstanding or classic, which is few for so highly touted a vintage. These wines are ranked in order with prices included.
