A preliminary trial of beta-carotene in subjects infected with the human immunodeficiency virus

Article Abstract:

Sixty milligrams of beta-carotene supplements were given to 11 AIDS patients for three months to test the carotenoid's effect on the immunocompetence of the patients. Results showed improvements in the genetic translation of lymphocyte markers in patients given the supplements. This indicated that beta-carotene can enhance disease resistance in AIDS patients by increasing killer cell populations and activating lymphocytes. The results also showed that beta-carotene was not toxic at the dosage administered to the subjects.

Role of alcohol abuse in nutritional immunosuppression

Article Abstract:

The effect of alcohol on the nutritional aspects of immunity is examined to determine the mechanisms by which it reduces immunocompetence. As a substrate absorbed by the body, alcohol has deleterious effects on cells and organs mediating immunity. It also interferes with the uptake, storage and distribution of nutrients which can lead to malnutrition and ultimately immunosuppression. This indicates that alcoholics have greater infection risks due to the immunosuppressive influence of alcohol.

Nutritional effects and support in the patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

Article Abstract:

The epidemiology, intensity and progression of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) among acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients were examined. PEM is a condition characterized by somatic cell mass depletion out of proportion to body weight loss. Malnutrition results from food intake disorders, nutrient absorption anomalies and metabolic problems in AIDS patients. Nutritional supplementation can help some patients recover lost weight.
