The mom and pop editorial shop
Article Abstract:
The Genetics journal, published by the Genetics Society of America (GSA), experienced delays in publication during its early years. Printing problems caused late arrival of proofs and even revised proofs. Because of this publication lag, Genetics became unpopular with authors who normally submitted papers to be published in the journal. Even the GSA suffered declining membership. To remedy the situation, the editorial staff decided to raise the journal's price. This move improved the GSA's financial health.
