Calcium requirements for growth: are current recommendations adequate?

Article Abstract:

The phenomenon of bone formation, which results in accumulation of bone mass, is observed throughout the period of growth from infancy to adulthood. Peak bone mass is influenced by the presence of calcium, a vital threshold nutrient. Due to insufficient calcium intake, children cannot attain the genetically predetermined peak bone mass, and the bone tissue in adults deteriorates at a faster rate. Adolescents need calcium supplementation in their diets to ensure normal growth.

Importance of adequate vitamin A status during iron supplementation

Article Abstract:

Increasing amounts of vitamin A in populations prone to infections that need iron supplements to combat anemia may help alleviate increases in infections and morbidity as a result of the iron supplements. Pakistani children who participated in a study on iron supplements showed that those participants with higher levels of vitamin A experienced fewer infections than their counterparts. Scientists do not fully understand the link between vitamin A and iron.
