Education, entertainment, and a great snack: a WIC example

Article Abstract:

A group of nutrition teachers were able to conduct an interesting summer nutrition education class for small children. The class, which was presented by the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children agency in Lincoln, NE, consisted of giving peanut butter cookie dough to the children as 'play-dough.' The children were also given toy rolling pins and cookie cutters. While the children were taught the basics of food preparation, the cookie dough itself was a delicious and nutritious snack. A recipe of peanut butter cookie dough is also presented.

$mart WIC $hoppers: advanced nutrition education for WIC participants

Article Abstract:

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) noted that the seminars they held had large success discrepancies due to the diversity of the educational level of their target audience. While college level mothers found the classes too elementary, those with lower literacy levels had difficulty in assimilating the lessons. WIC remedied this problem by organizing a grocery store tour. Aside from the convenience of obtaining their WIC vouchers directly from the store, the activity taught participants how to choose nutritious foods and maximize their food budget.
