Nicotinamide and diabetes prevention

Article Abstract:

Nicotinamide may reduce the instances of diabetes in some individuals., In one study, as much as a 50% reduction in the development of insulin-dependant diabetes mellitus was found to occur over a five year period. Immunologic testing can identify individuals at high risk developing insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, and nicotinamide may offer a possibility of intervention to prevent the disease.A five year intervention study in New Zealand using nicotinamide is discussed.

Does diabetes mellitus increase the requirement for vitamin C?

Article Abstract:

The need for vitamin C supplementation in diabetes mellitus has not been firmly established. Although many people with diabetes mellitus have 30% lower levels of circulating vitamin C than people without diabetes, supplementation has not improved blood glucose concentrations. However, vitamin C supplements did apparently lower cellular sorbitol concentrations and strengthen fragile capillaries. Well designed further studies are needed.
