Obesity solutions: report of a meeting

Article Abstract:

A workshop on 'Obesity Solutions,' sponsored by the St. Luke's-Roosevelt Obesity Research Center and Nestle R&D Center Inc. was held at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, New York, New York, on Jan 11, 1996. Topics included obesity as a public health issue, causes, complications, the role of leptin in controlling food intake, treatment, and predictors of success. Metabolic adaptation to weight loss resulting in a 15% reduction in energy expenditure makes it difficult to maintain the lower weight. The workshop suggested some promising avenues of research for control of obesity, as well as indicators of the complexity of the problem.

Type 2 diabetes among the Pima Indians of Arizona: an epidemic attributable to environmental change?

Article Abstract:

The Pima Indians of Arizona are genetically predisposed toward non-insulin-dependent diabetes. The incidence of diabetes is the highest in the world, striking many children and adolescents. Risk factors include obesity, lack of physical activity, and others. Since the prevalence of the disease has risen sharply in the past 30 years, the environmental impact has been substantial.

The obesity epidemic is a worldwide phenomenon

Article Abstract:

The obesity epidemic is now worldwide with levels going up rapidly. Obesity is not only a disease of developed nations, with levels in some less developed and transitional countries as high as those in the US or higher. Diet and activity changes correlate positively with the changes, but little work has been done to lead to understanding of the factors involved.
