Pregnancy and iron deficiency: unresolved issues
Article Abstract:
More research is needed to determine whether pregnant women with iron deficiency need to be given iron supplements. Iron deficiency is common in pregnant women, occurring in 35% to 75%. The cessation of menstruation initially lowers the requirement for iron, but the expansion of blood volume and increase in red blood cells soon raises the requirement. However, it is still not clear that iron deficiency in the mother affects the developing fetus. Some physicians believe that only anemic women should take iron supplements.

Hookworm control as a strategy to prevent iron deficiency
Article Abstract:
A campaign to control hookworms while increasing the iron intake may help prevent iron deficiency in adults. Approximately one billion people are infested with hookworms which cause intestinal blood loss and adversely affect hemoglobin concentrations. Intermittent treatment with anthelmintics and supplementation of dietary iron has been proven effective. It is not yet known if hookworms are a major factor in iron deficiency in preschool children.
