Regulatory and legal aspects of functional foods: the Australian perspective

Article Abstract:

The Australia New Zealand Food Authority is re-examining the role of functional foods. Australian regulations prohibit health claims on food labels because most nutritionists believe that health is a result of a good diet overall. However, functional foods challenge the regulatory structure in most Western societies that classifies food and drugs separately. Functional foods could be classified as both. This issue will require the participation of regulators, scientists, consumers and members of the food industry.

Research and development on functional foods in Malaysia

Article Abstract:

Scientists in Malaysia are hard at work identifying compounds in plants that may have medicinal value. It is estimated that over 6,000 plants in the tropical region have medicinal value and 1,200 have been used in traditional medicine. Many universities and research institutions are isolating chemicals from plants that can facilitate wound healing, kill infectious microorganisms and inhibit carcinogenesis.
