The determination of nutritional requirements: mathematical modeling of nutrient-response curves

Article Abstract:

An expanded form of the Saturation Kinematics Model (SKM) forecasting the suppressed portion of the nutrient-response curve is presented. The SKM is used to characterize physiological activities as functions of a limiting nutrient. The range of optimal nutrient dietary concentration can be predicted using the model. Creating a three-dimensional graph of the expanded SKM using the time factor as the third axis can exhibit the temporal variations in parameter measures and relationship.

Introduction to modeling

Article Abstract:

Mathematical models help explain the relationships between parameters. Two modeling approaches utilizing compartmental analysis and their application to nutrition research are presented. The first, empirical compartmental modeling, is generally used in explaining the kinetics of tracers with respect to time after administration. The second, model-based compartmental analysis, is used to create and measure compartmental descriptions of the dynamics of specific systems.

Development of a model for selenite metabolism in humans

Article Abstract:

The construction of a kinematic model of human selenite metabolism is presented. Actual measures of fecal, urine and plasma selenite concentrations are compared with the predictions of the initial model. The original model is modified to take into account results of experimental studies. The modified model is then used to check the assumptions made initially and to predict the consequences of selenite supplements on the serum concentration of the mineral.
