Jointing green lumber boosts grade, cuts costs
Article Abstract:
The Forest Research Institute of New Zealand's newly developed timber joint technology stands to increase structural framing lumber output by as much as 20%. Called Greenweld, the new technology took over three years to develop. It uses a three-part resorcinol-type adhesive system and a fingerjointer to produce the structural framing lumber. Greenweld allows sawmillers to create longer lengths of wood and eliminate defects by cutting them out. Once the defects are eliminated they can be rejoined using the Greenweld technology.

A method of drying lumber in dry kilns using weight-based control technology reduces losses due to degrade. Unlike most systems that regulate air temperature and humidity in kilns based on time schedules, the new technology allows kiln operators to keep abreast of the the moisture content of the lumber on a continual basis. The weight-based system tells the operator how quickly the lumber is drying and when it is dry.

NZ mill upgrade combines top technology of south, north
Article Abstract:
New Zealand's state-owned Forestry Corp is spending about $3.8 million to upgrade its Waipa sawmill. The mill, the country's largest, is part of a large complex that includes several value-adding facilities. The investment is intended to improve the mill's recovery rate and give it the ability to handle smaller, cheaper logs. Higher earnings should allow Forestry Corp to recoup its investment in under two years.
