Provinces fight over lumber-quota shares

Canadian provinces Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec and Ontario are fighting over the amount of lumber they will be allowed to export to the US. Every year, 14.7 billion board feet of lumber are shipped to the US, approximately a C$8 billion market. British Columbia, traditionally the largest supplier of lumber, wanted to receive 65% of the quota, byut received only 59%, while Ontario and Quebec, which have made large export gains in past years, received their traditional percentages as well.

Why are lumber prices so low? Look to Japan, US for answer
Article Abstract:
The price of lumber remains low in spite of rising consumption, according to a report on the North American market. Causes of the glut include increased production in the US and falling demand by Asian countries such as Japan. Figures for 1997 show falling exports and rising production, plus higher imports.

Canada seeks arbitration on US lumber classifications

The Dominion of Canada has reacted to the lumber reclassification and import quotas made by the US Customs Service and is seeking arbitration, consultation, and referral to the World Customs Organization concerning tariff reclassification.
