Small sawmiller diversifies to bypass wood shortages
Article Abstract:
The drop in timber volume in the Pacific Northwest has forced Avison Lumber Company Inc. to diversify into Brazilian imports and value-added products. Avison purchases lumber, home and furniture components, and remanufacturing blanks in Brazil for uses that include sales to Japanese customers, domestic remanufacturing plants, and domestic end-users. Avison has also shifted the emphasis of their Molalla, OR, mills from large volumes of sawed lumber to specialty products lines that include bridge timbers, cants, studs, kiln-dried wood, laminated materials, and fingerjointed products.

Sawmiller credits 'attitude' for production improvements
Article Abstract:
Claude Howard Lumber Co of Statesboro, GA, learned how to work more efficiently, safely and happily from George Culp's sawmill in New London, NC. Howard competes with neighboring Griffin Lumber Co to increase sawmill production, increase worker safety and increase product quality within a friendly atmosphere. The mill saws twice as much lumber per hour in 1992 than it did when it started in 1981, not only because of the more efficient work methods but also because of the Infeed machine.
