Article Abstract:
King Juan Carlos of Spain was the chosen successor of Generalissimo Francisco Franco. Though he was expected to be an ineffective leader, his decisive acts during the Feb 1981 coup attempt preserved civilian rule and paved the way for Spanish democracy.
