Article Abstract:

New Hampshire state rep Larry Pickett was ridiculed in the spring of 1963 when he proposed the state run its own lottery, at a time there was a federal ban on sweepstakes. Pickett got the bill passed though, and New Hampshire became the first state with a lottery.

Cold day for a swim

Article Abstract:

Roger Chandler and Phil Rossi were harvesting periwinkles on a bitterly cold winter day in Maine when their boat drifted away. They barely managed to swim the 200 yards to shore through the frigid water and the 53 degree below zero wind chill.
