Article Abstract:

Uranium was a scientific curiosity until Leo Szilard speculated that bombarding uranium atoms with neutrons would set off a chain reaction, which would release tremendous amounts of energy. The bomb dropped in Hiroshima used uranium-235, while the one used in Nagasaki used plutonium-239.

The end of World War II saw the US rise as the most powerful nation in the world. It was also the beginning of uneasy relations with the Communist world led by the Soviet Union which led to the Cold War that threatened the world with annihilation through nuclear means.
