Campers can help prevent wild-animal attacks by leaving them alone. Black bears are more interested in food than in attacking people, so campers should keep their food 12 feet off the ground. Cougars, deer and raccoons have the potential to attack people, although attacks are fairly rare.

Rescuing a river

Article Abstract:

The Sacramento River is recovering from the environmental havoc caused by a 1991 freight train crash that dumped metam sodium into the river. Wildlife biologists planted trees and undertook other restoration efforts. Reviving the river's trout was the biggest challenge.

Article Abstract:

Snowshoes can be helpful when trekking through winter snow. Simple snowshoes can be made, at home, with the help of an adult. A ten step instruction plan, which requires plywood, screws, inner tube strips, a ripsaw, drill and bits and a screwdriver, is included.
