Medicine: The Clinical-Trials Bottleneck
Article Abstract:
New cancer therapies must pass randomized clinical trials before being approved. There is widespread resistance to these trials by doctors, insurers and patients. The first ever decrease in cancer deaths was announced three years ago, but after statistical adjustments are made, the only real change is due to fewer men smoking. New therapies are held up at the clinical testing level which can take years.
