Routine versus selective intraoperative cholangiography during cholecystectomy
Article Abstract:
Surgeons are divided over the issue of injecting a dye into a patient's bile ducts before removing the gallbladder. Some surgeons believe the dye makes it easier for the surgeon to see the ducts and avoid injuring them. Others say the injection itself can injure the ducts. A study published in 2003 supports the argument that the dye lowers the risk of injury. This is important because it can help surgeons avoid a malpractice lawsuit.
