Article Abstract:

The Appalachian Mountain Club offers 20 openings every year for positions working at the AMC's alpine huts during the summer. The students who work at the huts must carry heavy wooden packboards loaded with food to the huts, cook and clean, search for missing hikers, and answer hikers' questions about the flora and fauna of the area, for 45 hours per week.

Ice follies

Article Abstract:

The Super Brownies was a group of people in Manchester, NH, who gained national attention in the 20's and 30's for their annual New Year's day swim in a local pond, despite the icy cold weather. The group disbanded in 1936 though it is affectionately recalled by surviving members.

The Allagash river flows through the wilderness of Northern Maine, but guides such as Gil Gilpatrick take canoe trips down this wild river. Gilpatrick has been doing the job for over thirty years and one such trip is described.
