Packer, ANI and the ethics of corporate secrecy

Article Abstract:

ABC television in Australia investigated media magnate Kerry Packer's influence and dealings in a program called "Packer Power." The program revealed some findings about Packer's failed lobbying effort to win the license for a Sydney casino by discrediting his competitor, the Leighton Showboat consortium. The program also revealed some questionable transactions at ANI when Packer was the dominant shareholder. Much of these findings illustrate the level of corporate secrecy and the need for governmental limitations to safeguard the public against it.

The welfare lobby, tax reform and a GST: high risk politicking

Article Abstract:

The Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) has changed its lobbying tactics to broaden its political alliances with business organinizations and to influence the tax debate over a goods and services tax (GST). Although ideologically opposed to business groups and the Liberal government, ACOSS recognized the need for increasing declining revenue and made proposals supporting the GST as part of a tax reform package to maintain a progressive system and compensate low-income taxpayers. ACOSS lost influence after the 1996 Liberal election victory.
