The blobs
Article Abstract:
Strange but wonderful marine creatures washed up one day on the shore of Gloucester, MA. The creatures, which looked like transparent drops of jelly with inlaid bluish purple threads, were called blobs by the local paper. The blobs turned out to be species of advanced invertebrates known as Thalia.

Some places in the US have unusual names, such as Stockholm, WI, Oslo, MN, and Lisbon, NY. The names were generally chosen as a sentiment for cultural developments, political changes and immigrants' motherlands. However, some were also named for people, including New York and Paris, NY.
