The stuttering doctor's 'monster study:' having started to stammer as a young boy, Wendell Johnson was convinced that stutterers are made, not born. To prove it, he tried to turn a group of orphans into stutterers and then ignored the results
Article Abstract:
Dr. Wendell Johnson conducted a study in 1939 that attempted to determine whether or not stutterling was a learned behavior. The results of the study were inconclusive, and were not found until 2001, long after Johnson's death. The long-term social effects of the research on the subjects, who were orphans, are described.
