Article Abstract:

The summer of 1963 was the last carefree time for America's youth. Surfing and beach parties were the mainstay of popular culture. At the end of that summer the March on Washington opened a new era in the civil rights struggle and Pres Kennedy was assassinated a few months later.

Wyeth, nearing 80, has become known by many as 'America's Painter.' He asserts that his paintings are largely based on memories of growing up in New England. Wyeth has largely limited his experience to the small area in Pennsylvania where he ws raised.
