Wangari Maathai was 25 years old when she felt that she needed to protect Kenya from becoming a desert. From promoting tree-planting under the Green Belt Movement in 1984, Maathai has become one of Pres. Daniel arap Moi's staunchest political critics to change the way that Kenyan leaders rule.
