'98 attorney general's race unsettled, crowded

Article Abstract:

Several candidates are contesting for the post of Attorney General as California's Attorney General Dan Lungren has decided to contest for the post of the governor in the 1998 elections. Some of the potential successors are Bill Lockyer, Michael Capizzi, Lynn Schenk and Charles Calderon. The clauses on election campaign expenditure under Proposition 208, and the outcome of legal challenges to legislative term limits can affect the final candidate list. The political background and accomplishments of several potential candidates are presented.

Phil Guthrie - an appreciation ... without spin

Article Abstract:

Phil Guthrie, who died of cancer of the esophagus in Sep 1996, was information officer of the California Department of Corrections. A disciplined and good-humored bureaucrat, Guthrie was favourite among the reporters as he provided reliable information of the state prisons. He believed in the freedom of press and government information, and was the only flack to receive the Society of Professional Journalists' Freedom of Information award.

Article Abstract:

Los Angeles Police Dept. Inspector General Katherine Mader has, at 48, an impressive and varied background including work as a health-care proponent, criminal defense lawyer, prosecutor and writer. She is known for the systematic manner of doing things and the importance she gives to well-researched policies. She is a staunch advocate of nondiscrimination in the workforce, whether it be in terms of ethnicity or gender.
