Atomic politics

Article Abstract:

The US government faced considerable opposition when it ruled in 1995 that California could have 1,000 acres of federal land for a radioactive waste dump in Ward Valley. Indeed, a court ruling has now made it almost impossible that such a facility will be constructed on this site. However, 2,200 tons of radioactive waste from New York, NY, has been dumped at Buttonwillow, near Bakersfield, CA, despite concerns about the possible contamination of groundwater. It seems that California Governor Gray Davis wishes to avoid criticizing President Bill Clinton over this development, for fear that Clinton will retaliate by raising money for California Democrats.
