A tale of two states

Article Abstract:

The number of Latin American voters in the US increased significantly in the 20th century, which is recognized by potential presidential candidates in their election campaigns. George W. Bush, a Republican, Governor of Texas, has addressed the people in Spanish and has placed advertisements on the radio in Spanish. Texas appears to be more conscious of its Latin American voters than California, for commercial, historical, and geographical reasons.

Arnold and George

Article Abstract:

The interdependency of President George W Bush and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is commented. It is observed that the governor's political capital could garner votes for the President in California whilst financial aid and President Bush could diffuse California's fiscal crisis and strengthen the governor's political platform.

Campaigning in the age of Monica

Article Abstract:

The outcome of the Nov 1998 elections in California is being closely watched not for the usual reasons but for the expected effect of Pres Clinton's dalliance with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky on the candidacy of Democratic politicians. Barbara Boxer, who is running for the state Senate for a second term, has responded to the 'crisis' by pointing out the illogic of voting for her opponent, Matt Fong, on account of Clinton's misdemeanor. Clinton has also remained popular despite the crisis, prompting Fong and fellow Republican Dan Lungren to avoid openly hurling insults against him.
