Canadian political miscalculation? Quebec's referendum 95
Article Abstract:
Canada's perilous handling of the 1995 referendum on Quebec 'sovereignty' reflects the country's political indecisiveness and the dual nature of the sovereigntist group. Under the umbrella of sovereigntist rhetoric are those promoting a loose form of political self-determination and a committed body of separatists who want to dismantle Canada's federalist structure. This forces political debate into ultimately absurd chains of illogic in an effort to satisfy both. Eventually Canada must resolve the issue, however.

Canadian political arithmetic: Quebec, and Canada, after Charlottetown
Article Abstract:
Results of the 1993 Canadian federal election caught the country by surprise. Prior to the elections, analysts had predicted that the Conservatives would retain their majority due to the Liberals' unpopularity, particularly in Quebec, where nationalists had attacked the Liberal government headed by Jean Chretien. However, the Liberals won a solid majority in the elections. Two regional parties, the Reform Party and the Bloc Quebecois, figured prominently in the elections in Ottawa.
