Defining fellow compatriots as 'others': national identity in Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

This article discusses national identity at an individual and collective level in the community of Hong Kong, since its incorporation with China in 1997; despite a majority of Chinese in the population of Hong Kong, there are many differences, due to the varying economic, political and legal attitudes between the two countries. The Basic Law was written into the constitution, allowing Hong Kong to maintain a capitalist system until 2047, but not to exist as a separate entity outside of China; the 'one country, two systems' dilemma is evaluated.

The national identity problem and democratization: Rustow's theory of sequence

Article Abstract:

Dankwart Rustow's theory that democratization cannot take place until national identity problems are solved is not completely supportable, although democratic management can address the identity issue. There is an inverse relationship between the sequence proposed by Rustow and democratic management of national identity.
