Quality of life and the WTP for an increased life expectancy at an advanced age
Article Abstract:
The measure used to compute for increased survival probability is correlated with the insurance premium one is willing to pay for a program increasing life expectancy by one year. The measure is used by adult Swedes and involves a rating scale between the worst possible quality of life equivalent to one and the best possible quality of life equivalent to ten. The study also shows that the willingness to pay increases with age but at a low rate.

Qalys: a comment
Article Abstract:
Broome stated that time method-based quality adjusted life years (Qalys) are consistent with individual preferences as long as life years are not discounted. In addition, Qalys based on the probability method are consistent with individual preferences only when risk-neutrality over discounted life years is present. It is shown that the time method is consistent with discounting if the quality weight is derived correctly.

Qalys
Article Abstract:
An analysisof quality-adjusted life years (qalys) is presented. The analysis focuses on the application of qalys to evaluate the decision making process involving resource allocation in medicine and individual medical care practice. It is shown that the method for making the adjustment for quality needs to be reconsidered. In addition, the use of qalys reveals problems which affect its application.
