Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan is playing an active role in California state educational reform even though he has not held an official post on a school governing body. Riordan believes that Los Angeles educational body Los Angeles School District provides an inadequate service to schools in the district. He is determined to improve education in the city in spite of being criticized for taking direct action.
