Rim of promise

Article Abstract:

The consumer boom in Asian countries has improved California's exports, especially the high-tech areas of computers, industrial machinery, and electronic goods. California is a thoroughfare for westbound US exports, and imports from countries along the Pacific Rim. With state growth in export doubling, California's Trade and Commerce Agency has opened offices in Asian countries to help businessmen. Strong Asian economies are maintaining growth levels above that of the US. But Asian markets are unpredictable as Asian countries are likely to form their own free-trade area.

Dollars from the right

Article Abstract:

The Allied Business PAC, founded by Senator Rob Hurtt, Howard Ahmanson and other conservative businessmen, with its new name, California Independent Business PAC has been California's largest beneficiary of GOP conservatives. The earlier efforts were more guided by the economic considerations, but of late the organization is learning the arts of politics. Profits in campaign politics may not be instantaneous, but need good business sense to succeed.

Can welfare work?

Article Abstract:

California is in the process of reforming its welfare system, which will require all recipients to work. The new system is expected to offer job training, help with finding a job, mental health and substance abuse treatment, and child care. Benefit will cease if the recipient fails to find work within the specified time. Reform plans are flexible and individual counties are expected to set their own standards and plans.
