Article Abstract:

Chief justice of the California Supreme Court Ronald George is responsible for the rulings on abortion and three-strikes policy. People were strongly against these rulings which may cost him his current position. However, George gained renown with the Hillside Strangler case where he convicted Angelo Buono of nine murder charges along with rape. Though he has not officially declared his plans for reconfirmation, campaigns have been taking place in his behalf.

End of the Lucas era

Article Abstract:

A California voters' campaign supporting capital punishment resulted in the ouster of three Supreme Court judges and accession of Malcolm Lucas as the Chief Justice. During Lucas's tenure of office, the state Supreme Court upheld 85% of its total capital cases, including 95% since 1992. The Lucas court also showed its concern for business and environmental issues, while largely removing the court from political controversies and interference.

Article Abstract:

The structure of California's lower courts has changed, and this is one of the reasons that campaigning costs, for judges, have escalated. In Fall 2000, a litigation attorney spent $700,000 to win an open seat on the Superior Court that pays an annual salary of $133,000.
