The welfare cost of housing standards: theory with application in Jakarta
Article Abstract:
The effects of housing standards in Jakarta, Indonesia are analyzed to determine the applicability of the economic theory which states that housing standards are likely to impose quantity constraints on the consumption possibilities of the poor. Results based on household level data which was used to calculate instituted housing standards at unsubsidized prices reveal that the welfare cost of the standards can represent a significant proportion of the additional spending called for by the standards.
