The 1992 general election and the British party system
Article Abstract:
The 1992 general election in Britain demonstrated the continued strength of the Conservative Party and prolonged malaise of Labour. The divisions in British politics are due more to the geographical distribution of wealth and social advantage than to differences of ideology. This can be attributed to the lack of proportional representation and has consequences for inter-party alliances. The Conservative Party's opposition to European Community involvement poses greater risks to its continued dominance than do opposition parties within Britain.
